Following the approval of the texts by the two Committees, the EP will vote on the files in autumn 2018
The EP’s Committees on Industry, Research, Telecommunications and Energy (ITRE) and on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) held a joint meeting on the outcomes of the final trilogue on the Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union. During the meeting, the MEPs voted with 88 in favour and 11 against the negotiated agreement reached on 20 June (see news of 22 June: “EU strikes deals on energy efficiency targets and governance rules”).
Furthermore, the ITRE Committee members approved the trilogue agreements on two other files of the “Clean Energy for All Europeans” Package , namely the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and the RES Directive. The agreement on the EED was supported with 48 in favour and 8 against, while the RES Directive received 50 votes in favour and 7 against.
Following the Committee votes, the EP will vote on the final texts during a full plenary session in the autumn of 2018. After the EP’s approval, the Council of the European Union will also need to approve the final texts, which would then be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will be in force 20 days after their publication. The Member States will have 18 months to transpose the new Directives, while the Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union will be directly applicable across the EU.
